In 1760, Cornishman William Hamley moved to London and opened a toy shop. The shop has survived five blitz bombings and near liquidation during the depression of 1931 to become the biggest and most famous toy shop in the world. Hamleys is now one of London's major tourist attractions; around 5 million people visit the store every year, generating an annual profit of over £4 million. Over 5 days I photographed Hamleys customers with their purchases outside the store on Regent Street. Both their choice of toy and the manner in which they hold themselves provides an interesting insight into their character. |
